What you'll learn

This one-day hands-on bootcamp will offer you the tools to turn your video journalism skills into a viable profession. Using case studies and Q&As with other working professionals in the field, this class will uncover the process of getting work in both journalism and corporate doc-style or branded content.

The workshop will consist of 2 hours of speakers in the morning, a one hour lunch break, and 3 hours of workshop in the afternoon.

We will go over relationship building with clients, pitching, budgeting and rates, negotiating and contract drafting, which are topics often left in the dark when discussing the craft of storytelling. You will leave with concrete methods to be paid fairly for your work, plus examples of contract and budget templates.

This workshop is perfect for:
-Recent grads from journalism schools starting their career.
-Freelance video journalists looking to diversify their income with the skills at hand.
-Video journalists at the beginning of their career weighing the pros/cons of freelancing versus staff positions.
-People thinking of starting their own production company.

TESTIMONIAL:
"I've attended seminars and workshops relating to filmmaking, photography and the media industry for over 4 decades, and I'd say this is one of the best… absolutely authentic, no 'b.s.', and [the instructors] appeared genuinely interested in relating their experience in a truthful and helpful manner."

What students will learn:
Best practices for pitching to online news outlets
How to negotiate a fair rate for your project
How to leverage your journalism/documentary skills to get commercial work (branded content, direct work with brands and non profits)
How to write a proposal/deck presentation
How to draft a budget
The importance of a contract and how to make it work for you
How to manage client relationships versus commissioning editors.

What you need

This is not a technical class to learn shooting and editing. You should already know how to produce, shoot, and edit. Ideally you’ve been published, but are gearing for a "real world" crash course in the business. This workshop will focus on short form editorial and commercial work, not feature length projects.

This workshop is being offered 1 time:

    • Saturday, Mar 16 (11:00AM - 5:00PM)
