Hunter Herrick is a cinematographer based in Brooklyn, NY. His visual storytelling work includes short films, commercials and documentaries. Originally from England, Hunter grew up in Japan, Germany, Czech Republic, and the United States. His work in still and moving pictures takes him across the world, the Americas, and most often, the East River.
Hunter studied cinematography at the Czech National Film School, FAMU, in Prague, Czech Republic. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Film and Media Arts, with a concentration in Documentary and Dramatic Narrative, from American University in Washington, D.C. In addition to writing, producing and shooting short films on 16mm while at FAMU, Hunter co-created an independent program with mentor and experimental filmmaker Henry Hills. The program includes a focus on shooting, hand processing and screening experimental film. Since it’s inception in 2005, the program continues to be an integral component of the film program at FAMU.
Hunter brings a wealth of artistic experience to his cinematographic work. He is an accomplished sculptor, metalworker, and furniture designer. His aesthetic exploration is more force of nature than personal choice. The Southampton Press has called his work “elegantly foreboding” and “[of a] tactile rawness.” Beyond his arts and film work, Hunter is an avid surfer, often charging the local breaks at Long Beach and the Rockaways. He escapes the boroughs – to the mountains or out to the beach – awash in the din of his '77 Yamaha XS650.
