ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

As an EMMY award-winning Director of Photography and Lighting Designer I have worked in the film and television business for over 20 years and taught at various institutions over the last several years. My career as a cinematographer is unique as my work reflects my dual expertise as a Cinematographer and as a Lighting Designer. My career has been facilitated by my deep and facile understanding of camera, lighting and post techniques in all possible configurations – from large 20,000 seat arena concert settings to very low budget feature films where I work with only a small suitcase of lights. I have a long and varied career based on long-term relationships with collaborators – a rewarding way to deepen my work over time. As I have progressed in my cinematography profession I have been able to hone my craft – by simplifying and distilling what I know – so I can teach others how best to become great filmmakers, DPs and Lighting Designers. Over the last several years I have taught a Cinematography class at Columbia University’s Graduate Film program as an Adjunct Professor from 2009-2012. I also teach several workshops a year at Abel Cine Tech and have created and taught seminars at Sarah Lawrence College and YouTube Studios NY for their elite subscribers. Utilizing very little equipment to make incredible images makes me well-suited for teaching because it’s really about where and how you use the instruments, not how many you have. Teaching is also about collaboration, leadership and organization, skills that I have mastered over a long and varied career.
