The 3401 convertible is the latest addition to Bogen's 3021 series tripods. It features an easily removed center column that just as easily re-attaches as a lateral side arm. Not only does this allow the camera to be offset form the leg's position is provides the simplest way possible to shoot from directly overhead and take shots not possible with standard tripods. Then for real low angle work, there is an alternative ultra-short column supplied with the tripod which lets the legs spread wide to the lowest possible shooting position (even lower than the original 3021).
