The Canon 24-105mm f/4L is a great all-purpose lens with a wide zoom range. If you’re only renting one lens, this might be a good choice. The relatively slow aperture of f/4 does not make it ideal for low light situations, but if shooting somewhere with ample light it should do just fine.
The lens is constructed with one Super-UD glass element and three aspherical lenses, minimizing chromatic aberration and distortion. It has a useful image stabilizer function (IS) that allows the use of shutter speeds up to 3-stops slower with no increased image blur. This makes it an ideal lens for handheld work.
At the widest length, 24mm, the lens is legitimate wide angle on a full frame camera like a 5D. If using on an APS-C sized sensor such as 7D, it is not going to be very wide. The 24mm length will be more like a 40mm lens. It is advisable to use a lens like the 16-35mm on a cropped sensor.
Overall if you need a zoom lens that can go from a wide angle to telephoto, the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L is a great choice.
