What you'll learn

An invaluable, hands-on, 2 day advanced course for working DPs and Gaffers. This workshop dives deep into refined lighting techniques for documentary, narrative films, and commercials.

Using case studies that provide insight into the best practices Luke has developed over his career, this class will show how certain images were achieved with detailed knowledge. Students will cover dramatic lighting techniques used to film Patrick Stewart, Dakota Johnson, Sacha Baron Cohen, and many others. Luke will also draw lessons from his commercial work with Victoria’s Secret ads, and documentary work like Buck, Helvetica, and Netflix’s Abstract: the Art of Design. The workshop also covers large lighting setups like those used on OKGO’s I Won’t Let You Down video.

Students are encouraged to bring in unique clips or images that they’re curious about so Luke can decode how they were done and show how to apply those techniques to their own cinematography and filmmaking work.

Students will get advanced hands-on instruction explaining the construction, dynamics, and uses of most all lighting units used on-set. We will explore the quality of each unit and how to control it in various situations as well as how to control color, hard and softness, flicker, and CRI characteristics. Lighting units covered include:
-Tungsten
-LED
-HMI
-fluorescent
-pars
-fresnels

You’ll get hands-on experience with practical lighting set-ups and address issues of flexibility, expression, and speed. Lighting set ups we'll cover include:
-dramatic effect
-comedy
-silhouettes
-night exteriors
-interviews

Luke took excellent care of our gear. Despite the large amount of pieces involved everything came back extremely organized and in great condition. Friendly, punctual, and accommodating. Would be happy to rent to again!

February 2019

Amazing workshop, great to get some hands-on time instructed by an industry professional.

February 2019

Very knowledgable and entertaining DP - a great start to the Kitsplit workshop series. I was expecting the class to be more hands on and was surprised that 80 or so people were there. Smaller classes that cover multiple lighting setups (that are shorter, more affordable) would be great!

February 2019

Very informative!

February 2019

A very thorough course on lighting for anyone with various levels of experience.

February 2019

This class was fun and informative. Luke had a direct, plainspoken way of sharing insights that had an overall effect of demystifying his lighting wizardry. I also took away some practical tips that I imagine I will keep forever. The mixer portion was a bit crowded, so I didn't stay long there. But overall, time and money well spent.

February 2019

Went with a friend and ran into some old contacts. Was an interesting mixer, Luke was charming and knowledgeable for sure. Felt like an appropriate price for a chill hangout with other BK filmmakers. Would love to catch another one, but I also think I have an idea for how these could be a bit more interactive without being intrusive..plz follow up. Thanks for a great time!

Luke is the best! From the moment I picked up the Arri M18, he took time to help explain how to use it and was very thorough. He was also prompt on communication and very accommodating on the lighting rental.

Equipment was in great condition, and super flexible! Not a lot of places you can return at on 8pm on a Sunday, so thank you, Luke for that.
